Education

..Explore, Experience and Excite the Mind...

The Owaka Museum is a great place to introduce your students to The Catlins. If you are school based in this area, or visiting the Tautuku Outdoor Adventure Centre, why not explore what we have to offer? By participating in our museum-based programme we can help make your class camp an effective and enjoyable learning experience.

Our exhibitions are related to the heritage of The Catlins and include Maori settlement, early pioneers, shipwrecks, sawmilling, the coming of the railway, local businesses, and military involvement in World War I and II and feature objects, oral histories, and photographs accompanied by various audiovisual displays.

Programmes are activity based and a rich resource for discovering what life used to be like in The Catlins. Options are flexible and readily adaptable to your specific learning objectives. Join us on a fact-finding mission about the heritage of the area or talk to us in advance about your ideas and requirements so that our activities can be aligned with or used to support the New Zealand curriculum. Please download one of the activities below prior to your visit to the museum. We look forward to having you here.
