Museum Exhibitions

A number of interactive exhibit focus upon the cultural history of the area providing an excellent starting point at which to explore The Catlins. Early Maori and European settlement, industries and involvement in World War I & II are all presented with some elements being updated or expanded as new material becomes available.

Clothing in the Catlins: 1880s-1920s

An exhibition displaying the changes in clothing and customs in the Catlins, from the heavy skirts and restricting corsets of the Victorian age to the lighter lines and texture of the Edwardian fashion.


Suffrage 125 - Whakatū Wāhine

On 28 July 1893, the suffrage petition was submitted to Parliament. It contained the names and addresses of about 24,000 women aged 21 years or older. On display are copies of the sheets that were signed by women from Owaka and the wider Catlins area.
